The project.
The Nick explores the boundary between the player and the game. Its design brings exploration, narrative and moments of intense psychological pressure into one coherent experience. This case study documents Flat Reality’s internal production work, from the core systems to release preparation.
The challenge
The protagonist needed to remain vulnerable, with no direct combat capability. A small production team could not build a full-scale RPG combat system, yet encounters still needed meaningful decisions, readable interactions and a clear change of pace from exploration.
Designed around
the challenge.
No Weapons Fights System
Encounters are resolved through enemy behavior and environmental logic. The player observes, avoids danger and uses the surroundings to deal damage instead of attacking directly.
- Behavioral analysis of enemies
- Environmental interaction as the means of resistance
- Avoidance as a valid strategy
An interface that preserves immersion
Modern interface elements intentionally contrast with the retro-styled world. The core UI stays hidden during exploration and appears only when needed; encounters use a minimal HUD.
- Contextual interface visibility
- Minimal on-screen clutter
- A deliberate distinction between player and system

- System-level game design
- Narrative structure
- Gameplay prototypes and implementation
- Cross-disciplinary production coordination
- Quality control and release oversight
From brief
to delivery.
- 01Concept and narrative structure
- 02Core gameplay loop
- 03Key-system prototypes

Quality throughout
Testing checked the relationship between mechanics and narrative, the readability of encounters, difficulty and accessibility, and consistency across the visual and gameplay systems.
The outcome.
The Chapter 1 demo launched on Steam and itch.io. Limited-audience internal testing indicated that the encounter system supported engagement, pacing and the intended narrative direction.
